First Lt. Clyde Doyle, Jr., the son of a sitting United States Congressman, died from injuries after a plane crash near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on 24 January 1945. He was posthumously awarded an Air Medal for meritorious achievement in aerial flight in the Pacific Theater of Operations from 1 June 1942, to 1 March 1943. His parents accepted this award at a ceremony in 1949.
